HPC at Shanghai Jiao Tong University

Shanghai Jiao Tong University  is one of the most prestigious universities in China. A multidisciplinary high educational institute, Shanghai Jiao Tong University is a home of 31 schools and departments that are focused on research in diverse areas.

One of the recent excitements for the university is probably the new deployment in  its High Performance Computing center.  Founded in 2013, the High Performance Computing Center (HPCC) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University is one of the top centers of computational excellence in Chinese universities. The center’s goal is to become a major HPC research hub in APAC.  Currently, HPCC provides supercomputing services and education as well as research support tor professors and students at the university.

To meet the increasing demand for computing resources from scientists and researchers in different departments, HPCC has deployed the fastest supercomputer among all the universities in China’s Universities of Ministry of Education (MOE) in April 2013.  It is a 350-node heterogeneous cluster equipped with both CPUs and accelerators, including Nvidia’s GPGPU and Intel’s Xeon Phi coprocessor, with peak performance at 260TFlops. IBM Platform Computing is proudly to be part of the action. IBM Platform HPC, a  powerful, comprehensive cluster management software will be the workload scheduling and resource management engine behind various types of applications such as CFD modeling, particle simulations, drug design and disease study, big data applications, etc, that will be running on this system.  One of center’s main objectives is to achieve lower total cost of ownership through deployment of effective workload scheduling and resource management solution,  water cooling, GPU and SSD technology solutions. Platform HPC will be the right tool of choice to help achieve that goal. In fact, we encourage you to try out our Total Cost Ownership (TCO) tool to see for yourself how much saving you will gain with IBM Platform HPC.

James Lin, vice chair of the HPCC, a good friend of mine,  gave me a tour of the center during my recent visit to China. The new system is situated at school’s HPC center, a computing facility with amble space and an extra room for future expansion. James told me that he expects the system to be in high demand once it is fully functional after the initial testing, and the expanded processing power will help fuel many research projects across various disciplines and drive more innovations and discoveries, which in turn will further strengthen university’s overall academic competitiveness.  We will be checking back in soon with James for more stories at HPCC.
